Three things to look for
The first Pokémon cards in English were printed from 1999 to 2003. Pull these out first.
“Wizards” or a date from 1999 to 2003
In the tiny print at the bottom.
Wizards of the Coast (WOTC) cards, from Base Set, Jungle and Fossil to Team Rocket, Neo and Skyridge.
A small black “1 EDITION” circle
Just below the picture, on the left.
Collectors call these 1st Edition. A Base Set card with no stamp and no shadow down the right of the picture is Shadowless.
A shiny picture
The picture shines, not the whole card.
Collectors call these holos, or holo rares.
